These changes affect landlords and persons wishing to sell their dwelling.<\/p>\n<p>Dwelling is defined as a house, townhouse or unit.<\/p>\n<p>A landlord may not lease a dwelling unless the dwelling is smoke alarm compliant. A seller may not sell a dwelling unless the dwelling is smoke alarm compliant.<\/p>\n<p>Smoke alarms in the dwelling must:-<br \/>\n\u2022 Be photoelectric (AS 3786-2014); and<br \/>\n\u2022 Not also contain an ionisation censor; and<br \/>\n\u2022 Be less than 10 years old; and<br \/>\n\u2022 Operate when tested; and<br \/>\n\u2022 Be interconnected with every other smoke alarm in the dwelling so they all activate together.<\/p>\n<p>Smoke alarms must be installed on each storey:<br \/>\n\u2022 In each bedroom; and<br \/>\n\u2022 In hallways that connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling; or<br \/>\n\u2022 If there is no hallway, between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey; and<br \/>\n\u2022 If there are no bedrooms on a storey at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.<\/p>\n<p>Smoke alarms must be hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10 year battery or a combination of both may be allowed.
