{"id":29456,"date":"2026-04-02T00:57:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T00:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rmolaw.com.au\/?p=29456"},"modified":"2026-04-02T00:57:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T00:57:41","slug":"police-protection-directions-what-you-need-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rmolaw.com.au\/zh\/police-protection-directions-what-you-need-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Police Protection Directions: What you need to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/rmolaw.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/police-protection-directions-1024x585.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rmolaw.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/police-protection-directions-980x560.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/rmolaw.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/police-protection-directions-480x274.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 1 January 2026, police now have the power to issue on-the-spot 12-month Police Protection Directions (PPD\u2019s) for the purpose to stop threats or acts of domestic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PPD\u2019s can be issued by police when responding to a domestic violence incident that lasts for 12 months (and has immediate effect) and has certain conditions attached to similar to Protection Orders which is issued by a Magistrate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A PPD involves&nbsp;three types of people:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The aggrieved\u00a0\u2013 the person who is subject to the domestic violence;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Named persons\u00a0\u2013 other people who may also be at risk, such as children, family members; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The respondent\u00a0\u2013 the person who\u00a0is perpetrating the domestic violence. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When can Police issue a PPD?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Police may issue a PPD if they&nbsp;reasonably believe:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two or\u00a0more people\u00a0have a relationship covered by the law;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A\u00a0person has used domestic violence; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a paramount consideration that a PPD is necessary for your safety and protection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does a PPD\u00a0require?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If police issue a PPD on the respondent, then he or she must abide by the conditions of it.&nbsp; If they do not, it is a serious offence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some examples of standard conditions of a PPD are&nbsp;these:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>That the Respondent be of good behaviour towards the aggrieved;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That the Respondent must not harm, both physically and psychologically, the aggrieved;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That the Respondent must not commit an act of domestic violence;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not facilitating through another person, threats or acts of domestic violence;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That there be no contact between the Respondent and the aggrieved;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That the Respondent stay away from the aggrieved\u2019s workplace; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Returning to collect personal belongings <strong><u>only<\/u><\/strong> when police present<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What if you don\u2019t agree with the Police issuing a PPD?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can request a police review of the PPD within 28 days of the PPD being issued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Police Review<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only certain people can apply for a police review:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Respondent;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Aggrieved;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A named person on the PPD; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An authorised person acting for the aggrieved (such as a Lawyer).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When an application for police review is received,&nbsp; a Reviewing Officer (Senior Sergeant or Inspector) will review it and the reason it was given.&nbsp; The Reviewing Officer may decide the PPD stay in place and the Respondent, aggrieved or any other named parties on the PPD will be notified of the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Court Review<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can apply for a Court review at any time while a PPD is in force.
