Social Media Defamation: Bank Vs Trader

Have you aired your views in a social media comment or created a post yourself on a topical issue?

Be warned!

Bank Vs Trader

A senior trader employed by ANZ Bank used LinkedIn to create a post that blamed China for the coronavirus pandemic and criticised the political and societal systems in the United States.

His employer, ANZ, advised in a statement that the post did not reflect the bank’s views and “showed a distinct lack of judgment”.

The bank trader then lodged defamation proceedings against the bank.

Real Estate Agent Vs Tenant

In another social media defamation case, a real estate agent received an online letter on Facebook from a tenant.

The tenant was in a dispute with the real estate agent in relation to an end-of-lease inspection and a water bill.

The real estate agent threatened legal action if the posts were not removed by the tenant.
