Divorce: The Data
The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ divorce statistics reveal that 47.3% of divorces involve children and the median duration of marriage for those divorcing was 12.3 years.
There were 49,400 divorces granted across Australia, with 11,539 divorces granted in Queensland in 2018.
The rate of divorce increased by 2.8%, with an additional 318 divorces granted in Queensland.
Queensland’s median age for divorce for males was 46.5 years and for females the median age was 43.8 years.
Same-sex couples could access the divorce process in 2017 and there were 72 same-sex divorces.
Age Brackets
The age brackets with the highest divorce rate were:
- Male – 45-years-old to 49-years-old
- Female – 40-years-old to 44-years-old
The divorce rates by age groups revealed that, for younger groups (under 45-years-old) the divorce rate was higher for females, and it was higher for males in the older groups (over 45-years-old).
