International Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Today is International Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
The day was recognised by the United Nations as a “United Nations Day” in 2011.
Elder abuse takes many shapes and forms, including psychological abuse, financial abuse, neglect, physical abuse and sexual abuse.
The World Health Organisation defines elder abuse as “a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship, where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.”
In many parts of the world, elder abuse received little or no attention until recently.
Elder abuse was hidden from public view and was considered to be a private matter.
Studies conducted across the world have identified elder abuse as a serious public health and societal problem.
If the current rate of elder abuse is maintained (which we hope it will not be), elder abuse will become prevalent due to an ageing population.
What Can You Do To Help
- Keep an eye on the elderly in your community and look for signs of elder abuse.
- Report elder abuse to the authorities.
- Stay in touch with your elderly friends and family.
- Learn more about the elderly’s rights.
- Reach out to professional services to obtain guidance and support.
