Speeding Offences Increase By 26%
Despite a 30% reduction in traffic on Queensland roads, there has been a 26% increase in speeding offences.
There have also been reports of extremely high speeds in the past month with 1 driver caught doing 115km/h in a 60km/h zone in Deception Bay.
Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said:
βIt is very concerning how often our officers and speed camera systems are detecting exceptionally high speeds.
βThe risks of speeding have not changed and the faster you go, the more consequence there is if you hit something or someone else.β
Speeding charges in the past month include:
- 115km/h in a 60km/h zone on Deception Bay Road at Deception Bay (24 April 2020)
- 140km/h in a 90km/h zone on Maroochydore Road at Forest Glen (23 April 2020)
- 147km/h in a 100km//h zone on Bruce Highway at Maryborough (23 April 2020)
- 156km/h in a 100km/h zone on Ipswich Motorway at Goodna (22 April 2020)
- 133km/h in 110km/h zone on M1 at Ormeau (22 April 2020)
- 146km/h in 100km/h zone on Bruce Highway, Benaraby (13 April 2020)
- 112km/h in 80km/h zone on Teviot Road, South Maclean (13 April 2020)
Police believe drivers may be under the impression that police have reduced their policing activities due to COVID-19 β this is clearly not the case.
